Where the Heart Is

Letter from the Editor
The University of Michigan Law Quad in Ann Arbor

SOMETIMES WHERE you fall in love is just as precious as how you fall in love. For my husband and I, the leafy, tree-lined streets of the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus will always evoke the early days of our budding romance. We met during his senior year at U-M, and I will always remember our walks through the Law Quad, the late night milkshakes at Tios, and watching movies in his tiny, cramped student apartment on State Street. Ann Arbor is where our love story began, and the city will always be near and dear to my heart.

That’s why I’m thrilled to share this issue with you; it’s filled with beautiful stories from my own little “city of love.” In our proposal story, “From the Heart” (page 58), we share how Heather Leavitt, the incredibly talented woman behind the gorgeous cakes at Ann Arbor-based bakery Sweet Heather Anne, met — and then re-met — the man she is about to marry. In “On A Roll” (page 100), we go beyond the engagement to see how another Ann Arbor couple stepped out of the box and into the roller rink for a wedding unlike any other. They are a shining example of how to create a celebration that reflects your one-of-a-kind love story. And don’t miss our gorgeous cover story, “Madly in Love” (page 62), photographed at Ann Arbor’s charming Graduate Hotel. It’s filled with timeless fashion for the entire wedding party that will make you swoon wherever you’re tying the knot.

While Ann Arbor has certainly stolen my heart, this issue offers endless inspiration from all over Michigan. Turn to our Wedding Album (page 107) for local weddings from across the state, read about a family-farm-turned-wedding-venue in Rives Junction (page 31), and get tips on toning up for the big day from a Rochester Hills barre pilates studio (page 40). We even asked local travel blogger Klaudia Jakubiak to spotlight her favorite Michigan destination for an unforgettable honeymoon (page 80).

Finally, take a trip to the heart of Detroit to meet the female wedding industry pros behind a stunningly beautiful shoot at the historic Packard Plant (page 90). These inspiring women are proof that our state is rich with talented vendors and artists eager to help you create the wedding of your dreams, and as always, it’s my joy to share them with you in these pages.

Cheers,

Rebecca Voigt
